X’S Y OR Y of X

Is it the table’s leg or the leg of the table?

Is it the road’s edge or the edge of the road?

Is it the cat’s tail or the tail of the cat?

When talking about people or groups of people or animals, living things, it’s X’s Y. So:

It’s the cat’s tail.

The girl’s dress.

The teams’ uniforms.

When talking about inanimate objects, something that is not alive, it’s the Y of X. So:

It’s the leg of the table.

It’s the edge of the road.

It’s the blade of the fan.

IN SHORT:

People & Animals - the X’s Y

Inanimate objects (non-living things) - the Y of X

With plants  🌱🌷- the Y of the X sounds more natural:

It’s the stem of the rose.

It’s the trunk of the tree.

The petals of the flower.
