THE -ED SOUNDS IN ENGLISH (I)

 LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD

Little Red Riding Hood walked a long way to her Grandmother’s house every day. One day her mother asked her to go there early in the morning, so she fetched her basket, packed it with fruit and candy, and skipped on her way to the forest. She picked a few flowers, jumped a puddle or two and relaxed a little on the way, when a Big Bad Wolf dressed up as an angel surfaced from behind the bushes and talked her out of taking the path by the river.

Little Red Riding Hood hummed as she strolled along the path of the forest. She loved this path, and preferred it to the one along the river, but her mother had warned her it was dangerous, as a wolf lived in the area. She worried about the fact that she had disobeyed her mother, but she feared no wolf. Meanwhile, the wolf had hurried to Grandmother’s house and arrived there before Little Red. Grandmother opened the door and was appalled to see a wolf standing there. The wolf devoured Grandmother and prepared himself to attack Little Red.

The wolf pretended he was Grandmother and invited Little Red in. When Little Red noted that his eyes, ears, nose and mouth were too big, the wolf assaulted her. She shouted and expected to be heard by someone. A hunter decided to check what that noise was all about. He hunted down the wolf, wounded him and defended Little Red. The little girl almost fainted with joy when she saw that her grandmother was alive inside the wolf, and she understood that her disobedience resulted in something terrible. She decided never to disobey her mother again.

THE TH SOUNDS IN ENGLISH

Most students know that Portuguese does not have the “th” sound. What many people don’t know is that there are two “th” sounds in English. One of them is voiced and the other is voiceless. An easy way to identify if the sound is voiceless or voiced is the following:

Three thin thieves thought it was possible to come in through the bathroom window. Thief number one threw the rope and climbed up; thief number two told number three to count to thirty and let go. Thief number three didn’t know his math, counted to thirteen instead, and they both fell into some thorny bushes below.

These are my mother, my father and my brother. Although they don’t look like me, there are many ways in which we are similar. They are trustworthy and they never tell each other lies. Clothing is rather unimportant to them, as they believe it’s what’s inside us that counts. And the best of all, they live in another country, so there is no way we can bother each other.
