Read the following text in order to answer questions 3 and 4.

Biodiversity hotspots are regions of the world that are home to a large number of species that are found nowhere else on earth. These areas are important because they contain a high level of biological diversity, which is critical for maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting human well-being.

There are currently 36 recognized biodiversity hotspots around the world, which collectively cover only 2.4% of the Earth’s land surface but contain an estimated 50% of the world’s plant and animal species. Some examples of biodiversity hotspots include the Amazon rainforest in South America, the Mediterranean Basin in Europe and North Africa, and the Eastern Afromontane region in Africa.

Unfortunately, many biodiversity hotspots are also under threat due to human activities such as deforestation, overfishing, and pollution. These threats can lead to the extinction of many species and can have negative impacts on the functioning of entire ecosystems.

Therefore, it is important to protect these areas and the unique species they contain by implementing conservation measures such as habitat restoration, sustainable land use, and the creation of protected areas. By doing so, we can help preserve the incredible biological diversity of our planet for future generations to enjoy.
