NOT JUST A DRINK

A Turkish proverb says “Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death and sweet as love” and that summarizes quite well what Turkish coffee should be like. For the Turks, coffee is not simply a beverage; it has its own history, rituals and rules of when and how to drink it. Just as the Irish meet friends at a pub and chat over a pint of beer, the Turks also meet at the hundreds of thousands of coffee houses spread over the cities and socialize over a cup of coffee.

If you want to taste some Turkish coffee, here are the directions:

ü  Pour 1 ½ cups of cold water in the coffee pot for each cup of coffee that you make.

ü  Add one teaspoon of ground Turkish coffee per cup and stir. Add sugar if necessary.

ü  Heat the pot as slowly as you can. The slower the heat, the better.

ü  When the water boils, pour some of the coffee into cups, filling about a quarter of each cup to make sure that everybody gets a share of the foam.

ü  Continue heating the coffee until it boils again, and then pour the rest of the coffee into the cups.

ü  Wait for the coffee grounds to settle at the bottom of the cup and enjoy your delicious Turkish coffee.
