A wealthy man had a blue beard. He was extremely ugly and women would run away from him. He had been married several times before, but nobody knew what had happened to the wives. Eventually, Bluebeard managed to win the heart of one of his neighbors’ daughters. After they got married, they went to live in one of his vast houses. Telling his wife he had business to attend to in the country, Bluebeard added he would be gone for several days. Thus, he entrusted her with the keys to all of the rooms in the house. But he warned she was free to unlock any of the doors, but one. She agreed to that and waved him off.
Curiosity soon got her and then she risked a peek
in the forbidden chamber. As she unlocked the door, she found that the floor
was clotted with blood from the bodies of dead women Bluebeard kept there.
Having discovered the fate of Bluebeard’s previous wives, she got the door
closed and returned the key to its right place.
Unfortunately, the key was now stained with blood, and
the more she tried to clean it, the dirtier it got. Bluebeard suddenly returns,
discovers the bloody key, and threatens to kill his wife, but her brothers
arrive at the girl’s rescue, killing Bluebeard.

It’s all blue. In every direction, there’s just more
blue. Dark, light, vibrant, dull… all shades of blue. that’s exactly what draws
visitors’ attention when visiting Chefchaouen for the first time. And once you
are there, it makes you feel like you’re in a magical frozen or underwater
world. As the light shifts throughout the day, the blue glow changes and you
can look at the alleys afresh. The city has a welcoming aura, different from
the larger cities of Morocco like Fez or Marrakech: the streets aren’t large
nor full of shops, and the crowd isn’t thick either. Chefchaouen has been a
favorite stop along the Morocco tourist trail for decades, for it provides a
relaxing break where the lack of sights is part of the charm. In the town, one
can spend a day wandering and trying to find new angles of blue up and down
stairs or through small winding passageways. The main square has open-air cafes
and restaurants where there’s no rush to move on. Chefchaouen is surrounded by
a mountainous nature with trails leading off to one-day hikes. Unfortunately,
it’s cold and wet for all of my time: the blue sky is usually blocked by a
constant gray blanket.
